Vol. 345 No. 3

Written Answers. - North Cork Dump.

203.

asked the Minister for the Environment when his Department will sanction the building of a dump, for both general refuse and industrial waste at Ballydineen, Doneraile, County Cork, to service the north Cork area; and if his Department will take into account the nuisance and the problems that this dump, if sanctioned, is going to create for the people of the area.

The planning and organisation of waste disposal operations in their area is a matter for each local authority. While my Department have issued general guidelines on the selection, design and management of waste disposal sites, the choice of sites for their own waste disposal operations and the issue of permits for private waste disposal facilities are matters for decision by the local authority.

Ministerial sanction would arise only in the event of an application by the local authority for approval to raise a loan for acquisition and development of any particular site. There is no such proposal before my Department in respect of a site at Ballydineen, Doneraile.

I understand that Cork County Council have passed a resolution under section 4 of the City and County management (Amendment) Act, 1955, directing the county manager not to proceed with the development in question.
