Vol. 345 No. 9

Written Answers. - Clondalkin Paper Mills.

233.

asked the Taoiseach the arrangements he has made to convey to the representatives of the ICTU the result of his personal inquiries into the re-opening of Clondalkin Paper Mills as promised by him at his last meeting with the ICTU on 15 July 1983.

On a number of occasions since my meeting with ICTU on July 15 the Secretary of my Department, in consultation with the Department of Industry and Energy, informed officials of ICTU of the current position in relation to the examination by the IDA of certain proposals for the re-opening of the Clondalkin Paper Mills. In my meeting with representatives of Congress on 15 July, I had undertaken to have these proposals examined by the IDA and brought to Government as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this examination led eventually to the conclusion by the IDA that the proposals then under examination were likely to lead to a very substantial loss to State funds. The IDA is currently having further discussions with the proposers. An indication of possible interest by another overseas company is also being pursued. In the meantime, the Tánaiste, the Minister for Industry and Energy and I will be meeting Congress later today to review the situation from the viewpoint of both Government and Congress.
