Vol. 345 No. 12

Written Answers. - Fee-Paying Schools.

314.

asked the Minister for Education the number of fee-paying schools in the Republic, the salaries paid in such schools; the capitation grants, if any, that were paid; the capital grants paid; and if she will give details of other grants made available to all such schools.

There are 60 fee-paying recognised secondary schools in the State including 22 Protestant schools* and one Jewish School.* During the year, 1982, grants were paid as follows to the fee-paying secondary schools:

Capitation Grants

Science and Equipment Grants

Choirs and Orchestras Grants

Catholic Schools

£403,644

£94,358

£1,420

Protestant Schools

£203,494

£51,070

£356

Jewish School

£2,563

£633

Nil

Totals

£609,701

£146,061

£1,776

The total amount of incremental salary paid to teachers is not accounted for by reference to fee-paying schools and other schools and it would involve an inordinate amount of official time to compile the information requested.

*A special block grant amounting to £1,229,000 was paid to the Protestant Schools Secondary Education Committee in 1982 for distribution among the 22 Protestant secondary schools, on the basis that the money would be applied to necessitous pupils. A special grant of £7,357 was also paid on the same basis to the Jewish School in 1982. This arrangement is in lieu of the tuition grant paid to Catholic secondary schools where parents do not pay tuition fees.
