asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each year since 1979 (a) the number of new houses constructed by Government agencies on behalf of his Department for members of the Garda Síochána, (b) the total capital cost, (c) the cost of maintenance of houses owned by the State and occupied by members of the Garda Síochána and (d) the number of houses for members of the Garda Síochána at present under construction by all State agencies for his Department.

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the attached tabular statement.

(a) The above residences were provided by the Commissioners of Public Works the only agency providing Garda living accommodation in the period in question.

(b) It is not possible to state the actual cost of the residences provided as with few exceptions they were built as part of composite contracts for Garda station and residences within some cases, Government offices or rural automatic telephone exchanges.

(c) The information sought by the Deputy at (c) of his question is not available as expenditure on maintenance of the houses occupied by members of the Garda Síochána is not segregated from expenditure on Garda stations.
