Vol. 346 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Galway School Transport.

457.

asked the Minister for Education if she is satisfied with the school transport service being provided for the children of Derrybrien, Loughrea, County Galway, who are attending second level schools in Gort and who are picked up at 7.45 a.m. and arrive home at 5.30 p.m.; and if she will consider making more reasonable transport arrangements for these children.

The standard of service provided for the Derrybrien pupils is regarded as adequate, with a first pick-up time of 7.50 a.m. and a last set-down time of 5.10 p.m. I understand that the waiting time at the school is about 25 minutes in the morning and ten minutes in the afternoon. The school bus which caters for the Derrybrien pupils is also required to operate another route to Lough Cutra national school. The making of alternative arrangements for the Derrybrien pupils would involve additional expenditure which would not be warranted under the terms of the school transport scheme.
