Vol. 346 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

290.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 as she is 75 years of age, living alone, and has been an applicant for over four years.

Service will be provided for the person named as soon as it is possible to do so but it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be completed for about six months.

I very much regret the delay in providing telephones. However, by the end of 1984, the vast majority of telephone applications will be met on demand.

291.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider having the three telephone kiosks at Mitchelstown, County Cork resited due to the expansion of the town; or if he will consider erecting two additional kiosks, one at Liam Lynch Park and the other at Clonmel Road to cover the new housing estates for Captain Keane's Grove, Sarsfield Casey Drive, Clonmel Road and Brigown; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

292.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the erection of a telephone kiosk at Clonmel Road, Mitchelstown, County Cork to facilitate the built up areas of Clonmel Road Housing, Captain Keane's Grove, Sarsfield Casey Drive, and Mulberry.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 291 and 292 together.

There are no plans at present to provide additional public telephone facilities in Mitchelstown. However, the area will be surveyed shortly to establish if there is a need for additional public telephones. The Deputy will be communicated with when the results of the survey become available.

293.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when telephone service will be repaired for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 as she is elderly and living alone and has reported the problem for over a month without any response.

Records show that a fault report was received on 28 October 1983. A check was carried out on the line and it was found to be working normally.

Arrangements have been made for a special visit to the premises by technical staff within the next few days.

294.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the constant malfunctioning of the changed recording apparatus of a telephone in the case of a company (details supplied) in County Galway.

The recording apparatus used on the subscriber's line to announce the change in number is a standard type used also in other telecommunications administrations. Regrettably there have been problems on occasions with the tape and this has affected the recording. Such problems have been repaired quickly when reported or detected by exchange staff. The recording equipment is now working satisfactorily.

The subscriber's new telephone numbers appear in Part II of the 1983 Telephone Directory.

295.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the severe difficulties being experienced at present by subscribers in a telephone exchange area of Rosemount, Moate, County Westmeath; when sufficient equipment and trunking will be supplied to cater adequately for subscribers in the area; if he will make a statement on the matter.

Service for subscribers on the telephone exchange in question has been subject to interruptions because of damage to the telephone cable serving the area. The damage arises from major roadworks between Moate and Athlone. Every effort is being made to keep interruptions to a minimum.
