Vol. 346 No. 2

Written Answers. - Whiddy Oil Terminal.

272.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will make a statement on the present position regarding the restoration and replacement of the Whiddy oil terminal at Whiddy Island, Bantry, County Cork; and if Gulf Oil intend to reopen the terminal at an early date.

The question of restoring and reopening the Whiddy Island oil terminal is at this stage primarily one for Gulf, as owners. I am, however, anxious to assist in exploring all options in this regard in the hope of securing an early reopening of the terminal in the economic interest of the region and to assist the strategic oil stock position. I have been engaged in discussions with Gulf in recent months. It is clear that the company are also anxious to secure progress in this matter but it would be premature to suggest what the outcome of their discussions may be.
