Vol. 346 No. 5

Written Answers. - Illegal Lead Smelting.

281.

asked the Minister for the Environment the action he proposes to take to prevent the illegal smelting of lead in Prices Place, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.

I understand that the premises in question have been used for scrap dealing, including metal recovery, for many years. Action to deal with any breach of planning law or other environmental codes arising from operations at the premises would fall to be taken by Dublin Corporation.

I understand that emissions from the premises have been the subject of complaints by local residents and that the local authority successfully prosecuted the operators under the Control of Atmospheric Pollution Regulations, 1970. My Department are asking the corporation to consider whether they can take further action on foot of the statutory powers currently available to them.

Legislative controls of air pollution are at present being reviewed in my Department in the light of both national and EEC requirements including a proposed directive on air emissions from industrial plant.
