Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Rates Abatement for Hotels.

209.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the difficulties being experienced in different parts of the country by hoteliers with regard to the payment of rates and many new local charges; if he proposes to take any steps to deal with the matter in order to protect the many employees involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

256.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the serious financial position of all-resort hotels, he will consider favourably a rate abatement for the period of their closed season.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 209 and 256 together.

I am having a review carried out of the whole system of financing local authorities which, among other things, will look at how the burden of financing local services might be apportioned.

I have no proposals to extend rates relief at the moment. Generally speaking, the rateable valuation of hotels takes account of the seasonal nature of the business. In addition, there is provision by which rates and charges may be paid by instalments.

The position of hoteliers in relation to rates and charges is generally comparable with various other businesses in current economic conditions.
