Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Radio Service.

304.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will allow RTE to provide a radio service on long wave band frequency 254 kilohertz which would be received in Britain and the European mainland; when the frequency was allocated; and the reason it was not utilised.

RTE recently submitted an outline proposal to establish an additional radio service on the long wave band on 254 KHz. The proposal is under examination at present and a conclusion will be reached on it as quickly as possible.

The frequency 254 KHz was allocated to Ireland under the Final Acts of the Regional Administrative LF/MF Broadcasting Conference (Regions 1 and 3) held in Geneva in 1975. The agreement came into force on 23 November 1978. Authority to introduce an additional radio service on the frequency was not sought until the present proposals were submitted. The issue of whether such a service should be provided is not a clear-cut one.
