Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Satellite Broadcasting.

301.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has any proposals to introduce a Bill to regulate and organise satellite TV broadcasting in view of proposed developments in this regard.

302.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will outline the companies or individuals he has invited to submit proposals for the establishment of an Irish direct broadcasting satellite service.

303.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed that the contract will be awarded for a direct broadcasting satellite service; and when this service will be fully operational.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 301, 302 and 303 together. Legislation to regulate satellite broadcasting is not required at present but the need for it is a matter that will be considered in the light of the response to the proposals recently issued for a direct broadcasting satellite system.

It would not be appropriate to disclose the names of the organisations invited to submit proposals until the latest time for receipt of proposals has passed.

It is not possible to say at present what will be the outcome of the proposals invited recently.
