Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Rosslare Strand Protection Works.

358.

asked the Minister for Transport if he will as a matter of urgency ensure that CIE as per agreement immediately provide beach nourishment to Rosslare Strand, County Wexford, where tidal action is eating away the strand and golf course and is just 20 feet away from one of the village houses and business premises and where at present the local people are fearful for the safety of the village; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government decided in 1978 that CIE should be responsible for the provision of beach material for the nourishment of Rosslare Strand. In the period up to June, 1982 CIE provided more than 53,000 cubic metres of material to the strand. Work ceased at that time due to protest action by the Rosslare Harbour Beach Action Group.

During May and June of this year CIE provided over 100,000 cubic metres of material to the strand — the equivalent of three years supply. In the meantime the Commissioners of Public Works are continuing to undertake maintenance of the existing coast protection works at Rosslare Strand.

Wexford County Council have now lodged an application with the commissioners for a new capital scheme of protection works at the strand. I understand that the statutory preliminary examination of the proposal is being undertaken by the commissioners.

Question No. 359 withdrawn.
