Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 100 together.
I am aware of the concern of residents in urban areas generally at the increased incidence of crime and vandalism. Various measures have been taken to provide an increased Garda presence in our cities and towns and the Garda are constantly seeking ways and means of controlling crimes such as house breaking, mugging and the unauthorised taking of cars by altering manning levels and by changing patterns of patrolling.
As regards the particular measures being taken to combat crime in the areas referred to in the questions, the Garda authorities report that foot and mobile patrols from Crumlin station are being operated in these areas as much as possible. The services of the Crime Task Force based at Garda Headquarters and other specialised units from the Dublin Metropolitan Area Headquarters are frequently made available to supplement local patrols and to meet any special needs which arise from time to time.
The total Garda strength at Crumlin is at present 65 and the Garda authorities propose to allocate two additional gardaí to the station from the group of recruits who will be completing their training on 22 December 1983.
