Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Use of Foam Mattresses in Prisons.

106.

asked the Minister for Justice if all foam mattresses previously used in the cells of Garda stations and prisons have now been replaced.

Limerick East): As I indicated in reply to a question from the Deputy on 16 February 1983 about cell bedding material, a suitable type of mattress had been identified and supplies were being delivered at that time. The flame-retardant properties of the new mattresses are considerably better than those of the mattresses they replaced and the new mattresses do not emit the dangerous fumes that were the cause of concern in the case of the older ones.

The new mattresses have been provided in all cells in the prisons and places of detention and in those garda stations where prisoners are detained overnight or for more than a short period. Delivery to the Training Unit, Shelton Abbey and Shanganagh Castle is awaited.
