Vol. 347 No. 4

Written Answers. - Overflying of Shannon Airport.

220.

asked the Minister for Communications the reason Aer Lingus overflew Shannon Airport, County Clare, on 7, 12, 14 (two occasions) and 15 January 1984; and if he is satisfied that the company will not abandon this international airport now or in the future in respect of transatlantic flights.

It is established Government policy that Shannon Airport is Ireland's sole transatlantic gateway and will remain so. I am informed that prevailing weather conditions, and in particular heavy crosswinds, at Shannon made it necessary for Aer Lingus to overfly the airport on the days referred to by the Deputy. In all cases the decision to overfly was taken by the captain of the aircraft in the interests of the safety of the passengers and crew and after detailed consultation with the weather forecasters.
