Vol. 347 No. 7

Written Answers. - Closure of County Laois Firm.

266.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware of the pending closure of the oldest established construction firm (details supplied) in Portlaoise with a possible job loss of 100 people; and the action his Department will take to save the industry or to find alternative employment for its employees.

I am aware of the pending closure of the firm referred to. I understand that this development is due to continuing losses and to depressed market conditions which have resulted in serious overcapacity in the structural steel sector. Such overcapacity severely constrains the State agencies in taking effective measures to bring about a restructuring of the company. However, the IDA are taking all possible steps to secure the establishment of a project or projects which will provide alternative employment for the workers affected by the closure.

I understand that there are currently 62 people employed in this firm.
