Vol. 347 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Roscommon Unemployed.

301.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people unemployed in County Roscommon; their age groups; the numbers in receipt of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance, sickness benefit and small farmers assistance.

The number of persons on the live register at local employment offices in County Roscommon on 27 January 1984 was 1,903 of whom 581 were under 25 years of age. Of the total 864 were classified to unemployment benefit and 1,001 to unemployment assistance. The remainder (38) consisted mainly of persons registering in order to obtain credited social welfare contributions.

Not all persons signing at local employment offices are included in the live register. The information in respect of those registrants excluded from the live register in County Roscommon on 27 January 1984 is as follows: (a) UA Smallholders, 939; (b) Persons aged 65 years and over, 10; (c) Systematic short-time workers, 57.

Persons in receipt of disability benefit are not required to register at local employment offices and are not included on the live register. However, on 1 December 1983 there were 690 persons classified by the Department of Social Welfare as recipients of disability benefit in County Roscommon.
