The latest available estimate from the Department of the Environment of the total number of persons employed in the building and construction sector, which relates to mid-April 1983, is 81,000. These estimates are compiled annually and cover both private and public sectors.
Changes in the level of employment in private firms with five or more persons engaged are available on a monthly basis in index form. These index numbers cannot be used to provide employment estimates as the total number of persons employed in such firms has not been determined. Details of this index for the 12 months of 1983 were provided in reply to a question from the Deputy on Tuesday, 31 January 1984. The index for January 1984 is not yet available.
As regards the public sector, information is available on the average daily number of workers employed by local authorities in maintenance and improvement of public roads and this is given for each month of 1983 in the following table:—
