Vol. 347 No. 12

Written Answers. - Income Tax Refund.

383.

asked the Minister for Finance when an income tax refund will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer has claimed a deduction in respect of interest paid on two loans, one from the bank and the other from the county council. The interest paid on the bank loan has been vouched and an amended certificate of tax-free allowances to take account of this interest will be issued shortly. Any tax overdeducted since 6 April last would be refundable by the employer on operation of this certificate.

The interest paid on the county council loan has not been certified and a deduction for this interest could not, therefore, be allowed. The inspector has asked the taxpayer for a certificate on a number of occasions but the taxpayer has not yet responded. The inspector is again writing to the taxpayer in the matter.

asked the Minister for Finance if a person (details supplied) in County Galway is entitled to an income tax refund on the basis of the figures submitted; and if so, when it will be paid.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that on the basis of the information provided, underpayments of tax have come to light for the years 1979-80 and 1982-83. The underpayments will be collected by restricting the tax-free allowances for the year 1984-85.

An amended certificate of tax-free allowances will shortly be issued for the current year, 1983-84, to provide additional medical insurance relief. Any tax overdeducted since 6 April last will be refunded by the employer on operation of this certificate. There may be a further increase due in the tax-free allowances for this year on foot of life assurance premiums and the inspector of taxes will shortly be writing to the taxpayer's agents in the matter.
