Vol. 348 No. 1

Written Answers. - Transport Policy.

330.

asked the Minister for Communications if there are any policy proposals for the formulation of a comprehensive transport policy to be implemented during the life of the present Government.

The various aspects of transport policy are kept under continuous review by me. Decisions in relation to the new subvention strategy for CIE are already being implemented and I announced recently that proposals for road haulage liberalisation will be the subject of legislation which I will be bringing before the House shortly.

I have initiated a review separately of aviation policy, airports policy, shipping policy and ports policy. The Government will shortly consider the McKinsey proposals on CIE.

331.

asked the Minister for Communications if he has any proposals to amend the Transport Act, 1932, and allow free competition on a fair and equal basis between CIE and private transport operators.

In the course of the debate on the Transport Bill, 1983 in Dáil Éireann in December last, I announced that I had initiated a review of the operation and the provisions of the Road Transport Act, 1932. Until the review has been completed and I have had an opportunity to consider the report it will not be possible for me to come to any conclusions on such questions as the liberalisation of road passenger transport and revision of the legislation.
