Vol. 348 No. 3

Written Answers. - Boardings of Irish Ships.

374.

asked the Minister for Communications the powers that are available to the British security forces to board Irish ships under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894; and if it is intended to introduce legislation to provide the same freedom of movement to Irish ships as is enjoyed by those of other nations.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the powers which are available to the British security forces under British legislation. I am not empowered, and neither am I prepared, to try to interpret British legislation.

Irish ships enjoy the same freedom of the high seas as the ships of all other countries.
