Written Answers. - Garda Síochána.

498.

asked the Minister for Justice for each of the last five years in respect of persons (a) from the Dublin area and (b) from other areas; the number of applications that were received from these for positions in the Garda Síochána, the number of these that were called for interview; and the number of these that were appointed.

Limerick East): Records are kept in a form which relates to competitions rather than calendar years.

Tabular statement I sets out the particulars sought in respect of the 1983 competition.

There was no competition in 1982. In respect of the competitions held in each of the years 1979 to 1981, tabular statement II shows the numbers appointed (a) from the Dublin area and (b) from other areas. The records relating to these competitions were not kept in such a way as to enable a break-down to be given, as between the Dublin area and other areas, of the number of applications received or the number interviewed.

asked the Minister for Justice the present strength of the Garda Síochána; and the expected strength of the Garda force by the end of 1984.

500.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda recruits that will begin their training in each month of 1984.

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 499 and 500 together.

The strength of the Garda Síochána on 29 February, 1984, was 11,338 which includes 70 recruits appointed in January and 79 appointed in February.

As I indicated in the course of my contribution to the budget debate on 2 February, the intention during 1984 is to achieve and maintain an overall Garda strength of 11,400. With that end in mind and taking account of anticipated wastage, present plans are to recruit approximately 50 members in each of the months April, June, September and October. However, the precise numbers to be appointed will depend on the level of vacancies arising from resignations, retirements and deaths during the year.
