Vol. 348 No. 11

Written Answers. - Cleaners' Pay.

547.

asked the Minister for Justice the conditions and hourly rates of pay of office cleaners used in his Department; and whether such cleaners are directly employed by his Department; or by an outside agency.

Limerick East): My Department employs cleaning staff in the general Civil Service grade of cleaner. This grade is conditioned to a five day week and has sick leave, annual leave and superannuation conditions similar to those of other unestablished officers. Cleaners normally work 30 hours but may be required to work up to 42 hours per week. Their rate of pay is £106.61 per week.

In addition, some offices are cleaned by outside contractors who employ their own cleaning staff. Information is not available about the specific current conditions and rates of pay of these personnel but normal procedures in my Department provide that, on the placing or renewal of each cleaning contract, checks must be carried out to ensure that the only firms to be considered for the contracts are those which apply minimum trade union conditions and rates of pay to their employees.
