Vol. 348 No. 11

Written Answers. - Traffic Wardens.

548.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of traffic wardens employed in Dublin city from December 1982-83; the total cost of employment of all traffic wardens and other ancillary related services; and the total amount collected in fines over the same period.

Limerick East): Sixty-seven full-time and 28 part-time traffic wardens were employed in Dublin city on 31 December 1982. The numbers on 31 December 1983 were 83 full-time and 25 part-time wardens.

The expenditure in 1983 on pay, allowances and equipment of traffic wardens in Dublin was approximately £665,000. On the basis that the other ancillary related services mentioned in the question refer to the services provided in connection with the processing of fines-on-the-spot notices in the Central Fines-on-the-Spot Office at Coleraine House, Dublin 7, the expenditure in 1983 on the pay and allowances of staff concerned was approximately £423,000. This figure does not, however, include any sum in respect of pension liability or overhead costs; neither does it include the cost of related services such as services provided by the motor taxation offices in the processing of fines-on-the-spot notices, or the cost of the service of summons or court time involved. These costs are not readily available.

The total amount of fines-on-the-spot paid in Dublin in 1983 was £1,179,000. The total amount of fines imposed by the courts throughout the country under the Road Traffic Acts which was lodged in 1983 to the Motor Tax Account of the Department of the Environment was £2,757,000. Records are not kept in such a way as to isolate the amount included in this figure which related to court fines for parking offences in Dublin.
