asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the uncertainty that exists among students and teachers as to the format of the 1984 leaving certificate Irish Paper, specifically in connection with the proposed questions on poetry and as to whether the prescribed poems to which the questions refer will appear on the examination paper; and if, in order to remove this additional anxiety, she will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of any cause for uncertainty in this matter. The format of the 1984 leaving certificate papers in Irish will be the same as that for the corresponding papers set in this subject at the leaving certificate examinations in 1982 and 1983. In regard to questions on poetry, where the answer requires close or detailed reference to the text, the poem or the relevant section or sections of it appear on the paper.
