Vol. 349 No. 1

Written Answers. - Development Officers Scheme.

526.

asked the Minister for Education if she will reconsider her decision to terminate the employment of development officers from 29 February in view of the great work being done by them in organisations such as Connemara West Limited where 32 people are now employed; and if she considers it desirable that such a scheme should be further extended rather than being abandoned as is the case due to her recent decision.

527.

asked the Minister for Education whether a development officer will continue to be subsidised by her Department in the case of a company (details supplied) in County Galway.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 526 and 527 together.

The Government have decided that the development officer scheme should be placed on a permanent footing.

My Department have written to the company concerned outlining the decision of the Government and explaining the conditions of the continued funding of the development officer post.

May I ask, Sir, whether or not in your adjudication on the Private Notice Question referring to a situation in certain third-level colleges you were aware of the fact that the TUI members of Congress have threatened an all-out strike?

I took all relevant matters into consideration, as I am sure Deputy Tunney will appreciate.

You knew a strike was threatened?

I took everything into consideration.

And you do not regard it as urgent that the TUI members of Congress have threatened an all-out strike?

Please, Deputy, I am not going to discuss it here.

I am asking you: you do not regard it as urgent that so many students are being deprived of their services?

The question put down in the names of Deputies Tunney and O'Rourke did not meet the criteria laid down for Private Notice Questions.

Thank you. Therefore it is not urgent. That is all I wanted to know.
