After taking up office as Minister for Health I became aware that the National Health Council had been without members since 31 March 1978. I considered that, as Minister, I needed advice on various aspects of the health services from a broadly based advisory body such as the council. I accordingly set in train the process of getting nominations for appointment to the council, from a wide range of bodies and organisations. The members of the council were appointed on 6 March 1984 and they held their first meeting on 23 March.
