Vol. 349 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Recruits Medical Examinations.

591.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the temporary suspension of medical examinations for Garda recruits, and if he will make arrangements for the appointment of a surgeon to the force in the near future.

Limerick East): I am informed by the Garda authorities that, prior to the voluntary retirement of the Garda surgeon in January 1984, the required number of candidates were medically examined to cater for the appointment of recruits to the Force during the period January to March.

While interviews have been arranged by the Civil Service Commission for 16-17 April, with a view to recommending a suitable candidate to be appointed as Garda surgeon by the Government, I am in fact making new Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations to permit candidates to be medically examined by the acting surgeon to the Force.
