Dáil Éireann díospóireacht -
Tuesday, 3 Apr 1984

Vol. 349 No. 6

Written Answers. - Public Service Special Leave.

612.

asked the Minister for Education if the proposals of the Minister for the Public Service to grant special leave of absence, without pay, to members of the public service to enable them to gain experience in other fields, will also apply to teachers, and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the two schemes announced by the Minister of the Public Service in Dáil Éireann on 16 February 1984: a career breaks scheme and a job-sharing scheme. Details of the career breaks scheme are still the subject of discussion between the Department of the Public Service and the Civil Service Associations.

When details of both schemes are available it is proposed to have discussions on them with representatives of the teacher and managerial organisations in relation to the question of the feasibility of their application in the context of the teaching service.
