Vol. 350 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Oranmore (Galway) Sewage Disposal.

562.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will furnish details of a contract made by Galway County Council with his Department in connection with the proposal for the disposal of sewage from the proposed Oranmore sewerage scheme at Oranmore; and his views on the approval for a discharge licence recently lodged with his Department.

Licences for the discharge of sewage are not required from my Department. Foreshore licences in respect of outfall facilities for new sewerage schemes are a matter for the Department of Communications who, before issuing a licence, seek the views of my Department.

In June 1983 the Department of Transport (now the Department of Communications) sought the views of my Department on an application from Galway County Council for permission to lay a sewage outfall pipe on the foreshore at Rinville West in connection with the proposed Oranmore sewerage scheme. My Department were concerned about the adverse effect of this proposal on local oyster beds and have had a number of discussions with Galway County Council with a view to their designing a revised scheme which would be mutually acceptable. The county council agreed to reexamine the proposed scheme in the light of the Department's concern.
