The above licences were issued by the regional boards under the Control of Fishing for Salmon Order 1980 (S.I. No. 360 of 1980) as amended by the Control of Fishing for Salmon (Amendment) Order 1982 (S.I. No. 368 of 1982) and the Control of Fishing for Salmon by Drift Net (Kerry Fishery District) Order, 1982 (S.I. No. 367 of 1982).

In addition, 70 drift net licences and 25 draft net licences were issued in 1983 by the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board under the River Shannon Tidal Waters (Issue of Fishing Licences) Regulations, 1935.

Salmon conservation measures of all kinds, including the issue of salmon net fishing licences, are kept under review in my Department. I have no plans at present to amend by further order the prescribed maximum number of each kind of salmon net licence which may be issued by regional boards for public fisheries.
