Vol. 350 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Dublin Schools.

586.

asked the Minister for Finance when the Office of Public Works will complete the improvement works on the kitchen in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 1.

593.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the appalling conditions of schools (details supplied) in Dublin 1, the plans he has to improve the fabric of the school; the time scale involved; and if he will agree to the request of the parents committee to meet the committee urgently to discuss the appalling condition of the schools.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 586 and 593 together.

I am aware that conditions in the Irish schools at Marlborough Street are unsatisfactory due to a number of structural defects in the building. A contract has now been placed for a major scheme of remedial works which will comprise mainly: works to roof trusses, walls and ceilings, replacement of windows, eradication of dry rot and replastering and redecoration. The duration of the contract will be about three months. During that period temporary accommodation will be provided in the former kitchen and music room. The contractor has resumed work on these rooms and it should be completed in about two weeks time.

As positive action has been taken to remedy the problems at the schools the Minister for Education considers that a meeting with the parents is unnecessary.
