Vol. 350 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Act Amendment.

534.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will amend the necessary Road Traffic Act and abolish the anomaly whereby a person getting a licence endorsed in court, an endorsement which lasts for up to three years, and whereby the person fails to renew the current licence for one day or more during the three year period he/she automatically has that endorsement carried on to the licence for five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans at present to change the requirement of section 37 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 which provides for the carry over of endorsements to subsequent driving licences, subject to a limit of three years in the case of continuous licences or an aggregate of five years where a period elapses between the date of expiry of one licence and the date of issue of the next licence.

I will, however, bear the Deputy's representations in mind when a suitable opportunity arises to review the whole question of the procedure for endorsement of driving licences and the duration of such endorsements.
