Vol. 350 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Galway Redundancies.

584.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of workers who have been made redundant since January this year by the Office of Public works in the Headford district of County Galway; how the various individuals chosen for redundancy were chosen; and the reason for each of the redundancies.

Forty seven employees of the CorribMask-Robe Drainage Scheme, Headford, County Galway, have been made redundant since 1 January, 1984 but eight of these have been taken back into employment.

The redundancies were necessitated partly by reduction in the scale of operations on the drainage scheme, which is in its final phases and partly by restriction on the monies for the scheme provided in the 1984 Estimates.

The number of redundancies in each of the several grades of employees was decided on by the Office of Public Works with a view to achieving the required savings while at the same time retaining a viable and functionally effective work force.

Selection of individual employees for redundancy was made within each grade in accordance with the principle of "last in, first out", as agreed with the appropriate trade unions.
