Vol. 350 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pigmeat Industry.

671.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that because of recent difficulties with the export of Irish pig meat that pig producers are facing a likely reduction in output and consequent loss of investment; if he is aware of the consequences for employment in pig processing factories should this reduction in great numbers take place; the action or proposals there are to resolve this; if he will agree that many of the present problems stem from the inadequate control of premises slaughtering pigs for the home-market only; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

For some time past the pigmeat industry has been experiencing difficult conditions because of high feed costs and weak markets. Recently an industry arrangement for stabilising export market returns was terminated and this has operated to offset the effect of an emerging recovery on the export market. This arrangement was, however, a voluntary one involving the bulk of the industry and the State was not involved.

Control of premises slaughtering pigs for the home market only rests with local authorities so far as hygiene standards and veterinary inspection are concerned. It is not possible to compel the proprietors of such premises to participate in any industry arrangement to facilitate orderly marketing. In view, however, of the benefits of such marketing to all sectors of the industry it is to be hoped that the proprietors of those premises will reconsider their attitude and that current differences within the industry will be resolved as quickly as possible.
