Vol. 350 No. 5

Written Answers. - Emergency Services.

520.

asked the Taoiseach who has primary responsibility for co-ordinating emergency services at the scene of a major accident; and if will make a statement on the matter.

In the case of an accident involving fire, responsibility for control of operations at the scene is provided for in section 27 of the Fire Services Act, 1981.

In the case of major accidents not coming within the ambit of the Fire Services Act, 1981, the present arrangements are that the co-ordination of activities at the scene is a matter for agreement between the services involved in the preparation of emergency plans. These arrangements are being reviewed departmentally, under the aegis of the Inter-Departmental Committee on Emergency Preparations, with a view to determining an agreed approach among the various services involved.
