asked the Minister for Agriculture the present position regarding the Farm Modernisation Scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Details of the revised Farm Modernisation Scheme, effective from 3 January 1984, were published in a press release on 30 December 1983 and I am having a copy of this release sent to the Deputy.

Proposals for a comprehensive review of the EEC Directive, on which the Farm Modernisation Scheme is based, are currently being discussed by the Council of Ministers, but at this stage it is not possible to indicate their eventual impact on the scheme.

568.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of applicants awaiting approval under (a) the Farm Modernisation Scheme and (b) the Western Drainage Scheme.

The numbers of applicants for grant aid awaiting approval under the Farm Modernisation Scheme and Western Drainage Scheme are estimated at 2,200 and 10,600 respectively.
