Vol. 351 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Refunds.

541.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the present level of taxation on a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath; if there is a tax refund due; and if so, when will it be paid.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that the information now available to the inspector of taxes indicates that the taxpayer's total income for the current year, 1984-85, will not exceed the relevant exemption limit. Accordingly, an exemption certificate is now being issued direct to the payer of the taxpayer's retirement pension and, when that certificate is operated, all the tax which has been deducted from his pension since 6 April 1984 will be refunded to the taxpayer.

asked the Minister for Finance when a tax rebate will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer ceased employment on 19 November 1983, and submitted a claim to repayment of tax to the inspector of taxes on 1 February 1984. However, the inspector has not been able to process the claim because he did not receive the employer's copy of the cessation certificate (which is required under PAYE regulations) confirming the amounts of pay and tax deducted during the taxpayer's period of employment. The inspector has written to the taxpayer's former employer on two occasions for the necessary details but there has been no response. In the circumstances, he is arranging for an official to visit the employer with a view to obtaining the required information so that any refund of tax due may be made as quickly as possible.
