Vol. 351 No. 7

Written Answers. - IIRS Galway Office.

452.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware that the Institute of Industrial Research and Standards does not have an area office located in Galway; if he accepts that this is a disadvantage to industry and commerce in the west of Ireland; and if he will recommend that the institute establish a base in Galway.

The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards already provide research and development services to industry in the biotechnology field from their facility located in University College, Galway. Industrial liaison officers currently operate from Limerick and Sligo from which they maintain contact with industry in the west. Specialist services are made available from Dublin and other regional locations as required.

The general question of the provision of State services to industry on a regional basis will be addressed in the forthcoming White Paper on industrial policy.
