Vol. 351 No. 9

Written Answers. - Beef Production.

357.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the action he proposes to take in the light of the recent warning by the EEC Commissioner for Agriculture regarding the need to control beef production; if he accepts that that was the first shot in the battle for curbs along the lines of the milk super-levy; if he has given particular attention to that aspect; and if so he proposes to have discussions with both producers and processors to take a serious and realistic look at the industry while there is still time.

Market circumstances and prospects for beef are quite different from those for milk and in fact the Commissioner did not suggest a super-levy for the beef sector in his recent address to the European Parliament. I shall of course continue to follow developments in the beef sector closely in the context of my normal ongoing contacts with producers and the meat industry.
