Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations.

385.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will name each of the countries in which Ireland has a resident ambassador; if he will name any other countries to which a residential ambassador is also accredited; and if he will further name each country in which we have a consulate.

1. Ireland at present maintains diplomatic relations normally headed by ambassadors, on a resident basis, with 29 countries. Residential ambassadors are also accredited on a non-residential basis to 30 other countries with which Ireland maintains diplomatic relations.

2. In addition Ireland maintains Permanent Representations or Missions to a number of international organisations. These are the United Nations at New York and at Geneva and the European Communities at Brussels. Ireland also maintains through the Embassy in Paris permanent delegations to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. A non-resident Permanent Representative is accredited to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Ireland in connection with its bilateral aid programme, also maintains Development Co-operation Offices in Lesotho (classified as a consulate general), Tanzania and Zambia. Consulates-general (in the charge of career officers) are maintained in New York, Chicago, Boston and San Francisco.

3. A list of the countries in which Ireland at present has a resident ambassador and the other countries to which 18 of those ambassadors are accredited is given at Annex I.

4. The State Directory lists Irish Honorary Consuls abroad at pages 170-173.
