Vol. 352 No. 5
asked the Minister for Finance the position of the River Erne on the list of major catchments; and whether its position on the list has been changed since the passing of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945.

asked the Minister for Finance where the River Erne is placed on the arterial drainage priority list; and when he expects the Board of Works to be in a position to carry out the drainage work.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 159 and 160 together.
The Erne is No. 10 on the priority list of major catchments in the arterial drainage programme. The listed position of the catchment has not been altered but a scheme for that part of the catchment lying in the State prepared in 1970 was not proceeded with for economic reasons. However, a study of the entire Erne catchment area was commissioned jointly in 1979, under EEC auspices, by the Irish and British Governments, to examine proposals for development of the economy of the region. The study recommended that a drainage scheme for the southern reaches of the catchment be designed to accommodate all the relevant considerations, namely, agricultural, environmental, tourism, electricity generation and economic. At this stage I cannot say when a scheme for the catchment might be undertaken.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will name the rivers listed in the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945; and their priority rating.
The priority lists on which the arterial drainage programme is based do not form part of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, but were drawn up in 1946 following the passage of the Act. These lists are in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
