Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Projects.

341.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism his position in relation to the proposed Joint Development of Advanced Telecommunications Infrastructure Projects, which will have a high applied technology and engineering content and enable European firms to co-operate in joint projects, concentrating on the rapidly growing telematics market in telecommunications; and in view of the importance of the electronics and computer industries in this country, the plans that have been drawn up by the Government to participate in these long term development investment projects.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the consideration being given at EEC level to the question of establishing joint advanced telecommunications infrastructure projects in the Community.

Consideration of this matter by the Commission and the member states is at a preliminary stage and I do not propose to adopt a position on the issue pending the outcome of further consideration of the matter at EEC level. At this stage, it would be premature to formulate plans for Irish participation in such projects.
