Vol. 353 No. 2

Written Answers. - Christmas Parole.

558.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his policy regarding Christmas parole for long-term prisoners, particularly those who have already served considerable periods of nine years or more in prison without any time out; and if he will detail the criteria involved in making a decision regarding Christmas parole.

Limerick East): The sentences of all long-term offenders are kept under continuing review, notably at the interdisciplinary review meetings in the various prisons and places of detention. Factors taken into account in considering whether home leave which, of course, includes leave at Christmas, should be recommended in the case of an offender, include the length of time served, the offenders performance as regards work and conduct within the prison, and the likely risk to the community in the event of the offender's release.

Each offender is given details of his temporary release programme when it has been approved.
