Vol. 353 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drogheda Employment Statistics.

571.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of people in full-time employment each year for the last ten years in the town of Drogheda (male and female) the amount of new jobs created during this period each year; and the number of redundancies that have occurred over the same period.

As regards the first part of the question, the only information available in relation to Drogheda would be in the censuses of population carried out by the Central Statistics Office. I understand the relevant figures relating to the 1981 census are expected to be published in a few months.

Information available on job creation is confined to manufacturing industry and is supplied by the IDA on the basis of their employment survey. I hope that the information, which is as follows, will be helpful to the Deputy:

1 January

Jobs Gained

1975

96

1976

279

1977

500

1978

453

1979

405

1980

497

1981

227

1982

210

1983

177

1984

147

The figures are for all jobs gained including first time jobs, and do not allow for jobs lost.

Statistics of redundancies notified under the Redundancy Payments Acts compiled in my Department are not broken down into geographical areas. Monthly statistics of proposed redundancies notified are compiled on a countrywide basis and categorised by industrial sector and sex. I regret that it would not be practicable to extract statistics relating to particular towns, such as Drogheda.

With the Chair's permission, I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of the availability, or perhaps a better word is non availability, of moneys to enable County Dublin VEC to pay the higher education grants.

I shall communicate with Deputy Walsh.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the question of the closure of Beehive International Limited.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.

These Deputies are all slightly out of order, I presume.

You would never know.

Perhaps the Chair will be more flexible.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of what aid is being provided to the people of Ethiopia starving as a result of famine.

I shall communicate with Deputy De Rossa.
