Written Answers. - County Cork Industrial Development.

478.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will request the IDA to purchase the Kire Clothing Factory, Showgrounds, Fermoy, County Cork and have it refurbished and made available to interested industrialists in the form of an advance factory.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority do not propose to purchase the Kire Clothing Factory in Fermoy, County Cork.

The IDA will, however, have the factory inspected to assess its suitability for industrial promotion.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will declare the Mayfield area of Cork city a priority area for the establishment of new industry.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority is promoting the whole of the greater Cork area on a priority basis for industrial development.

The IDA development nearest Mayfield is the industrial estate at Kilbarry where the authority has a total of 127 acres of land, a 40,000 sq. ft. advance factory and 4 × 3,200 cluster units available for further industrial development. The Deputy will be aware of my intention to designate a number of industrial estates in the greater Cork area for higher grant purposes.

480.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the up-to-date position with regard to the industrial units at Shandon, County Cork; and the number of applications he has received to date.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that the Shandon Crafts Centre was completed in April 1984. The centre totals 9,000 sq. ft. and comprises 17 units, ranging in size from 400 to 1,000 sq. ft. Four crafts projects are already located in the centre, employing 10 people.

481.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he intends to extend the industrial development at Little Island, Cork.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority is vigorously promoting its remaining 76 acres of land at Little Island, Co. Cork, for suitable industrial projects particularly in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.

Three established firms at Little Island, Henkel Ireland Limited, Gaeleo Limited and Irish Fher Laboratories Limited are currently undertaking expansion programmes involving a total investment of about £7 million, product and process development and a significant increase in output.
