Vol. 353 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pirate Radio Station.

501.

asked the Minister for Communications if he is aware of the presence of a pirate radio station in County Galway; its interference with other communication systems and the unfair competition it provides for other advertising media in the western region; and the action he proposes to take to alleviate the problems being caused.

I am aware of the existence of an illegal broadcasting station in Galway and my Department has had reports of interference caused by this station.

Illegal broadcasting stations are liable to have their equipment seized at any time and their operators are liable to prosecution under the Wireless Telegraphy Acts. I will be introducing draft legislation shortly one of the objects of which will be to enable action to be taken to prevent illegal broadcasts generally.
