Limerick East): Apart from the detection of crime, the prevention of crime and the general enforcement of the criminal law are perhaps the most important duties undertaken by the Garda Síochána.
Those duties apart, it would be impracticable for me to attempt to enumerate the specific duties carried out by members of the force that do not involve crime detection, many of which arise in the general administration of the force and are an essential though indirect contribution to crime prevention, crime detection and the general maintenance of the peace.
