Vol. 353 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

704.

asked the Minister for Education if she will reduce the cost of a fare-paying ticket on a school bus for a person (details supplied) in County Galway as her parents, on unemployment assistance, cannot afford to pay the £90 fare to CIE.

As the pupil in question lives within 3 miles of the post-primary school she attends, she is not eligible for school transport under the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme. If she were to avail herself of concessionary fare-paying transport on a school bus, it would not be open to my Department to reduce the term fare payable. The term fare payable is at present £24 per term. Exemption from the payment of school transport charges on foot of the possession of a medical card by parents/ guardians applies only in the case of pupils who are eligible for school transport under the rules of the scheme.
