Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Extension of Licensing Hours.

407.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the public concern about the proposals in the document Building on Reality to extend the opening hours of licensed premises and if he will make a statement on the matter.

408.

asked the Minister for Justice the research and investigations carried out which apparently indicate that it would be desirable to have longer licensing hours; if he intends to publish the reports of the research carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos 407 and 408 together. The decision to extend the opening hours of licensed premises in the summer months was taken in the context of the Government's intention to remove obstacles to the development of the tourist trade. Details of the proposals to give effect to the Government's decision, including the revised hours of opening and the period during which they will apply, have not yet been decided. I am aware that the decision has been criticised by a number of organisations and individuals and I shall bring their views to the notice of the Government when the amending legislation is being finalised.
